About this issue
With many regular events on hold because of the holidays, we've made use of the space available to publish our best photographs of 2006. Intern Jillian Overstake selected most of the photos. Staff members made suggestions as well.
While I don't consider myself to be a real newspaper photographer, I like to take pictures that help tell a story, or capture an emotion, or — when I'm really lucky — a critical moment.
Thanks to all who were subjected to my camera lens this past year; for your patience with me. Thanks also to the coaches who let me get close to their players on the sidelines. (And to at least one referee who I met by my doing).
In the old days, I would have used up miles of camera film to get these shots. But thanks to your cooperation and the wonders of filmless, digital photography, we got the pictures we needed, though it took several tries for me to get it right.
Thanks also to our production guru, Melvin Honeyfield, for his digital darkroom skills. For the sharp-eyed among you who noticed, yes, we do have a new, cleaner-looking Hillsboro Star-Journal banner on our front page.
Happy new year!
Grant Overstake
