Accident on 13-mile road and U.S. 50 years ago
Newton fire and EMS crews were called to U.S. 50 and East Lake Road, known to most Hillsboro residents as 13-mile road, about 5:30 p.m. Friday after a vehicle collided with a semi-truck. Karen Wiebe of Hillsboro, the driver of the car, was taken to the hospital in serious condition. The semi-truck driver, Otis Daniels from Chesapeake, Ohio, was not seriously hurt in the accident. According to Harvey County Sheriff's department, Wiebe was attempting to make a left-handed turn toward Hillsboro, when the semi-truck attempted to pass her on her left side. As Wiebe continued to turn, her vehicle struck Daniels' truck and toppled over. Daniels was hauling square hay bales to a customer. Crews had to torch the top of the woman's vehicle to remove her from the crushed car.
