Accidents
The following accidents were reported to Marion County law enforcement agencies:
James R. Fruechting, 71, 605 S. Lincoln, Marion, was northbound on U.S.-77 just south of 110th at 10:32 p.m. Oct. 30 when a deer came from the east side of the road and was hit. Fruechting was driving a 1995 Buick LaSabre with passenger Donna Fruechting of the home. No one was injured, reports Deputy Don Rosine.
Leon R. Richmond, 29, 215 S. Ash, Hillsboro, was stopped at the stop sign at Nighthawk and U.S.-50 at 4:11 p.m. Oct. 29. Swapan K. Chaudhuri, 44, Newton, was westbound on U.S.-50. Richmond, driving a 1993 Ford Ranger, began to cross U.S.-50 and did not see Chaudhuri. Richmond's vehicle hit the 1999 Plymouth Acclaim, Chaudhuri was driving. No one was injured, reports Undersheriff Randal Brazil.
Betty A. Gayle, 56, 411 S. Cedar, Hillsboro was eastbound on 150th just east of Goldenrod at 5:50 p.m. Nov. 2 when three deer came from the south ditch. Gayle, driving a 1980 Chevrolet Malibu, could not avoid hitting one deer. Joseph Gayle of the home was a passenger in the vehicle. No one was injured, reports Deputy Larry Starkey.
Rhonda S. Bowers, 20, 115 N. Third, Apt. 206, Marion, stopped at the stop sign on Upland at 5:38 p.m. Oct. 22. She then pulled out in front of Michael D. Thomas, 50, 2165 U.S.-56, Marion, driving a 1988 Chevrolet pickup. Thomas was unable to avoid hitting the 1995 Buick Century Bowers was driving. Bowers' vehicle is registered to Gregory Bowers, 2330 U.S.-77. Thomas' vehicle is registered to Roger W. Hannaford, 224 Elm, Marion. Both Bowers and Thomas were taken by Marion Ambulance to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, reports Deputy Starkey.
Marie E. Kessler, 40, 630 220th, Hillsboro, was northbound on Falcon just north of 210th at 11:45 a.m. Nov. 1 when a deer entered the roadway and was hit. Kessler was driving a 1997 Buick Century. She was not injured, reports Deputy Rollin Schmidt.
Dina Vogel, 38, 1734 230th, Marion, was eastbound on U.S.-56 at milepost 296 at 9:17 a.m. Oct. 28 when a rock flew from a truck belonging to Gary Johnson Trucking, Salina, and struck the windshield of the 1997 Jeep Cherokee she was driving. The Jeep is registered to Vogel Farms, Ada, Okla. Vogel was not injured, reports Deputy Starkey.
John Alan Ottensmeier, 22, 714 Main, Florence was traveling east on U.S.-50 just east of Pawnee at 12:05 a.m. Oct. 14 when Clayton A. Beck, 27, Pana, Ill., crossed the center line and side swiped the trailer Ottensmeier was pulling with his 1997 Dodge pickup. Beck, driving a 2000 Freightliner registered to Active Transportation LLC, Hollywood, Ala., fell asleep at the wheel. Sergeant Jeff Soyez reports there were no injuries.
Julianne R. Chisholm, 15, 2868 Kanza, Durham, had slowed down on U.S.-56 to turn south on Adams, Hillsboro, at 7:28 p.m. Oct. 20. Paul L. Cross Jr., 55, Manhattan, was also westbound on U.S.-56 and unable to avoid hitting Chisholm's 1994 Ford Crown Victoria, registered to USD #410, Hillsboro. Cross was driving a 1997 Freightliner registered to KSS Truck Lines, Manhattan. Passengers in the Chisholm vehicle were Kory Unruh, 26, 212 S. Elm, Hillsboro; Lottie A. Alonzo, 18, 1806 Goldenrod, Hillsboro; and Alysha R. Classen, 14, 1806 Goldenrod, Hillsboro. No injuries were reported, states Deputy Aaron Waddell.
Norma J. Schmidt, 64, 1631 Falcon, Hillsboro, was northbound on Falcon between 140th and 150th at 10:10 p.m. Oct. 26. A bull entered the roadway, Schmidt swerved and missed the animal. The animal turned around and hit the 1998 Ford Taurus Schmidt was driving. She was not injured, reports Deputy Schmidt.
Sarah A. Horinek, 17, 1930 275th, Marion was northbound on Kanza just south of 170th at 6:10 p.m. Oct. 26. Horinek, driving a 1983 Ford Escort, began swerving when entering a bridge. She over-corrected causing a skid and 360 degree turn. The vehicle entered the west ditch and rolled onto its top. Horinek's vehicle is registered to James M. Horinek of the home. She was taken by Hillsboro Ambulance to Hillsboro Community Medical Center, reports Deputy Schmidt.
Brad A. Putter, 35, 111 N. Lincoln, Marion was southbound on U.S.-77 just north of 260th at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 27 when a deer entered the roadway. Putter, driving a 2000 Ford F150 registered to Deer Trail Implement Co., Marion, was unable to avoid hitting the deer. Putter was not injured, reports Deputy Schmidt.
