Accidents
Chase L. Schultz, 17, Newton, was northbound on K-15 just north of 80th at 5:39 p.m. Jan. 28. Schultz was following Bryce J. Ratzlaff, 24, 212 East Main, Goessel. Ratzlaff slowed down and Schultz's 1985 Honda C5S slid on the icy roadway, striking the rear of Ratzlaff's 1987 Ford F-150. Schultz's vehicle is registered to Wallis D. Schultz of the home. Ratzlaff's vehicle is registered to Sheila L. Ratzlaff of the home. No one was injured, reports Deputy Rollin Schmidt.
Raymond Starnes, 52, Grimes, Iowa, was parked on U.S.-50 just east of Turkey Creek at 9:40 a.m. Jan. 29. Shyrl L. Nunley, 56, Fresno, Calif., was traveling east of U.S.-50, moved to the right side of the roadway to avoid hitting an oncoming car, and struck Starnes' 2003 Peterbuilt. Ronald D. Nunley, 56, of the home, was a passenger in Nunley's 2005 Volvo. Starnes' truck is registered to Smithway Motor Express Inc., Fort Dodge, Iowa. Nunley's vehicle is registered to Marten Transport Ltd., Oklahoma City, Okla. No injuries were reported, states Deputy Schmidt.
Trenten M. Svitak, 14, 205 E. Burns, Herington, was eastbound on U.S.-50 just west of Nighthawk at 10:12 p.m. Feb. 4. Kendall R. Naber, 39, Cedar Falls, Iowa, was westbound. Svitak, driving a 1989 Dodge Caravan, crossed the centerline and struck Naber's 2001 Freightliner head on. Passengers in the Svitak vehicle were Todd M. Svitak, 40, 2753 Remington, Marion, and Taylor M. Svitak, 12, 205 E. Burns, Herington. Michael Jury, 38, Newton, was a witness to the accident. Trenten Svitak and Taylor Svitak were taken by Lifeteam to Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. Todd Svitak was taken to Zeiner Funeral Home. Naber's vehicle is registered to Panther Transport, Des Moines, Iowa. The registered owner of the Svitak vehicle was Todd Svitak, reports Undersheriff Randal Brazil.
