Andrew Sheffler wins county spelling bee

Andrew Sheffler, a seventh grade student at Peabody-Burns Junior High, earned the title Thursday of top speller in Marion County.

Sheffler won the Marion County spelling bee held at Marion City Building. Twenty-four contestants throughout the county participated in the event.

Sheffler will move on to spell March 25 at the state level at Washburn University, Topeka.

Sheffler earned a trip to the county contest by taking first at the PBJH spelling bee.

Students took a written test to qualify. Seven students then went ahead to decide the local winner. Crys Commerford, PBJH English teacher help the students with the contest.

To prepare for the county contest, Sheffler studied a list of words supplied by the state. He also practiced with his parents, Connie and Gary. The final two words he spelled correctly were, "antebellum" and "primal."
