Gina Andrews was crowned Marion County 4-H Queen just before midday Wednesday, the first day of the 2003 Marion County Fair. Last year's queen, Andrea Carlson, crowned Andrews in the pavilion at the fairgrounds in Hillsboro.
Andrews, 16, is a 10-year member of the South Cottonwood 4-H Club. Her parents are Gary and Sally Andrews. She's enrolled in clothing, crochet, and leadership.
She said her parents are her heroes.
First alternate is Kristin Mueller, 18. Her parents are Donald and Francie Mueller. She is an 11-year member of the Tampa Triple T's 4-H Club.
Mueller is enrolled in dairy, foods, leadership, arts, and public speaking. Her hero, she said, is her very helpful mother, and other people have been heroes, too, at various times, she added.
Second alternate for 2003 is Jackie Klenda, 15. She is a nine-year member of the Tampa club. Her parents are Val and Julie Klenda. She's enrolled in beef, crochet, and leadership.
She said her mother is her hero.
Other royal attendants were:
Jenne Beneke, 15, daughter of Corky and Kathy Bloom. She is a seven-year member of the Lincolnville Wide Awake Club. She's enrolled in foods, crochet, arts and crafts, clothing, and leadership.
Her mother, for getting her into 4-H, and other reasons, is her hero, she said.
Sarah Peugh, 15, a three-year member of the Peabody Achievers 4-H Club. She's the daughter of Dan and Melodie Peugh. She's enrolled in foods, photography, arts and crafts, plants science, and geology.
She said her hero is "Jesus, because he died for me."
Carlson, last year's queen, is the daughter of Duane and Karen Carlson of Lincolnville. A senior at Centre High School, Andrea is a member of the Lincolnville Wide Awake Club.
Lindsay Matz, now a senior at Fort Hays State University in Hays, started the queen contest at the Marion County Fair in 2000. This was the fourth annual competition.
Matz was crowned 4-H queen of the Tri-County Fair in Herington in 1999. She was a member of the Wide Awake Club at Lincolnville, and is a graduate of Centre High School.
This was her last year to coordinate the contest in Hillsboro, as she is getting married next August.
She is majoring in radio broadcasting at FHSU.
