Andrews seeks board of education position

Running uncontested in next Tuesday's election for a seat on the USD #410 Board of Education, Gary Andrews, 45, said, "I feel it is my time to serve. It is a way to give back to the community."

Originally from the Salina area, Andrews earned a 2-year-degree in agricultural business at Colby Community College before moving to Hillsboro. He and his wife Sally have two daughters: Gina who is a senior at Hillsboro High School and Lora who is a sophomore.

As superintendent of the Hillsboro Municipal Golf Course for the last 15 years, Andrews knows how to operate a nine-hole golf course on a very limited budge. He feels he has gained certain money management skills which will come in handy considering the budget issues facing the district.

For the past 12 years, Andrews has served as a member and former squad leader of the Sons of the American Legion Post 366.

Andrews also is active in the Hillsboro schools. In the past, he served two years on the middle school Site Council. More recently, he was secretary of the Trojan Booster Club, which he admits was "time consuming." Now he is continuing in that same organization as a member.

"I'm very easy to talk to," related Andrews as he shares that people skills are assets he plans to bring to the board position. He knows all the present board members on a first name basis. And he is available for dialogue with members of the community.

"If people want to talk to me, I'm always here," he said.

Finally, considering the issues facing the board, Andrews said, "I don't have an agenda. I'm going in with an open mind."
