Aquatics center opens May 28 with new hours, family plan years ago

The word "family" — as in Season Family Pass — now can be used to describe the payment plans available at the Hillsboro Family Aquatics Center.

Two weeks before it opens for its second year of operation on May 28, several changes in pool fees, hours, and staffing were unanimously approved Monday by the Hillsboro City Council.

Topping the list is the reinstitution of an all-season Family Pass, for $125, an option which despite protests from parents and grandparents was not offered last year. In addition to the Family Pass, the aquatics center will offer an individual season pass for $50.

The passes were contained in a package of proposals presented to the council by Judy Helmer, who along with Marci Cain will co-manage the aquatics center this summer. The assistant manager will be Holly Lindsay.

"I think Judy has come up with a really good plan on how this is going to work," said Hillsboro Mayor Delores Dalke.

The aquatics center's new hours are Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. After daily lap swim from 5 to 6 p.m., the pool will reopen in the evening from 6 to 9 p.m.

Regular day pass admission is $2 for swimmers aged five to adult, and free for children four and under. Daily lap swim is $1 or free for day pass or season pass holders.

Saturday and Sunday pool hours are from 1 to 7 p.m.

Hillsboro Swim Team will practice weekdays from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. And several sessions of Red Cross swimming lessons will be offered in the morning through the summer.

The pool may be rented for s after-hour parties for $30 per hour for up to 25 guests, with an additional $10 per hour per every 10 guests over 25.

Unlike last season, there will be at least one manager present at all times during working hours. And five lifeguards (earning $6.50 per hour) will be on duty, four at a time, at all times, rotating every 15 minutes.

In another policy change, non-swimming adults in street clothes wishing to come into the pool area to watch their children or grandchildren swim will be admitted free. Last year everyone paid to get in.
