Area retailers have mixed reviews of shopping season
The 2002 Christmas season wasn't an especially joyful one for many United States retailers.
With most sales figures showing a decline in spending from last year, and even mammoth Wal-Mart failing to meet its projections, this year's holiday shopping season was disappointing, according to analysts.
Around the Hillsboro area, retailers have mixed views about this year's spending season.
At Quick Flick-Radio Shack on South Main, manager Cora Friesen said that her store had a solid holiday season.
"We were busy," she said.
Sales this year are even a little better than last year's, Friesen said. Some of her more popular items included a laser level device, remote control toys, and DVD players.
Over at Alco, manager Joe Hampton also said that his store had a good December — better than he expected, he said.
"I was very pleased," Hampton said.
But at Dollar General, the shoppers didn't spend quite as much as manager Marilyn Carlson had expected.
Sales were good, she said, but a little lower than projected.
