Artistic cheerleaders make banner season
The Hillsboro High School football team should have a huge home field advantage for the big game Friday night. But just to make absolutely sure that the Trojan players are pumping adrenaline from every pore before the 7 p.m. kickoff, the cheerleaders will be on the sidelines with a giant paper banner for players to break through as they take the field.
This old-school tradition has been renewed thanks to a squad of artistic cheerleaders, and the approval of head football coach Len Coryea, who agreed that these Trojans have earned the right to run through a pre-game banner in this, the most banner-worthy season in the history of Hillsboro High School football.
Add pre-game banners to the long list of motivational signs, messages, and treats these cheerleaders have deployed this season to motivate their team.
Under the direction of cheerleader sponsors Valerie Duerksen and Lisa Mayfield, the squad has spent time this season painting bus and car windows, putting good luck notes in lockers, and painting banners for the hallways, such as the one that warns opponents, "You'll crackle when we tackle."
Trojan opponents have indeed been crackling and crumbling under the hard-hitting defense during this playoff run.
These Trojan cheerleaders, who've spent many cold nights keeping the crowd fired up during this playoff run, deserve some cheers themselves.
Squad members include, Lauryn Mayfield, Sydney Waner, Andrea Jost, Rachelle Goldsby, Meghan Jost, Ashley Moss, Brianna Allen, and Mieka Serene.
