Band solos, ensembles head to state

The Hillsboro band competed in the regional music festival recently and qualified eight members for state competition to be held Saturday, April 24.

Those who qualified by receiving I's were Kelli Just, Nicole Brouillard, Janet Glahn, Diedre Funk, Jenny Whisenhunt, Alysha Claassen, and Lora Andrews.

The following who received II's were: Percussion Ensemble — Chad Hughbanks, Daniel Schmidt, Daniel Berg, Daniel Miller, Megan McCarty, Aaron Stepanek; Brass Ensemble — Thomas Murphy, Aaron Stepanek, Sammy Espada, Caleb Barkman, Sean Leihy, Brantley Hanna, Darren Enns, Adam Dirks, John Crouse, Travis Riesen, Ashley Bringhurst; Soloists receiving II's — Thomas Murphy, Darren Enns.

The following received III's: Clarinet Ensemble — Danielle Kelley, Kelsey Kaufman, Jacque Fisher, Meredith Kliewer, Sara Buller, Kelli Janzen, Sherry Bosworth, Marissa Nightengale, Charissa Slayden, Rose Vineski, Casey Bezdek, Elissa Richert. Sammy Espada also played a solo.

At the state band contest held at Bethany College in Lindsborg, the band received a II, II, and I, which is the first I rating for the band at state in many years. The band played "Prestissimo" by Karl King, "River of Dreams by Victor Lopez," and "Addison Way" by Ed Huckeby.
