Barnett advances, but Meier polls well here in Tuesday primary

Hillsboro voters went to the polls Tuesday but did not have many decisions to make.

Republican voters from Hillsboro First precinct chose former Marion resident James Meier for State Senate District #17, 51-49. However, voters from Hillsboro Second chose incumbent Jim Barnett, 79-56, over Meier.

Even though Meier carried the county, 607-549, Barnett went on to defeat Meier 2,503-1,082 in the Republican race for the seat.

Barnett will meet Democratic senate candidate Sharon Karr in the general election in November.

Paul Jantzen and Elaine Jantzen were elected as precinct committeeman and woman respectively, for Hillsboro First precinct.

Hillsboro Second precinct did not have any declared candidates.

Write-in votes will be announced at 9 a.m. Friday when Marion County Commission canvasses the votes.

In other races, Dan Holub defeated Max Hayen for the Marion County Commission District #2 position 382-292.

Randy Dallke was the sole candidate for the district three commission seat and received 278 votes.

District one seat, held by Bob Hein, was not for election this year.

Five Marion County officials were uncontested and all were re-elected.
