Base hired as public works director

After a five-minute executive session last Wednesday night, Goessel City Council approved hiring Joe Base as public works director starting Dec. 16 at $12 per hour with health benefits to begin in January 2005. Base is currently police chief.

Public works director Arlen Goertzen recommended that the city purchase two gift certificates to The Cookie Jar for Kyle Funk and Fred Schmidt for their help with putting up and working with Christmas decorations. The city approved his recommendation by consensus.

Goertzen reported that sand has been hauled on several streets and the ditch along Centennial Drive has been cleaned out. He also encouraged the council to review the emergency preparedness plan and put it into effect. Goertzen thanked the mayor and council for their years of support. The city will hold a farewell open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Dec. 30 at the civic center community room. The public is invited.

The council agreed to purchase time clocks for the city office and city shop. Citywide cleanup Saturdays were tentatively set for July 16 and Oct. 15.

The annual governing body and staff potluck dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 8, 2005, in the community room.

Council approved:

— Ordinance 199, Landlord Liability Ordinance, which will take effect Jan. 1, 2005.

— increasing the city clerk's hours to 128 hours per month beginning in January 2005.

— purchasing a highchair and several booster seats for the community room.

— hiring Lyle Christ to paint the community room and hall at $12.50 per hour plus the cost of paint.
