Several members of the Butler Community College of Marion art class displayed their paintings on June 16 at the Hillsboro Senior Center as part of the center's program.
After the potluck noon meal, the large audience was treated to a time of sharing by various students in the BCC art class. Painting I and II are taught by Pat Wick, and more than 15 students are in the class.
"They are a neat and interesting group," Wick said. "About 10 of them have audited the class and have taken the course over and over."
Wick said she may have two or three new and younger students, but her core students, approximately 10-12 regulars, are senior citizens.
According to Wick, some have taken the painting class for 10 years, and most of them have become close friends through the years.
The mixed group consists of retired teachers, nurses, business owners, and veterans. They come from Hillsboro, Cedar Point, Tampa, Florence, Marion, Peabody, and Emporia.
The students use a variety of media in the class including acrylics, water colors, oils, pastels, pen and pencil, and charcoal.
During the exhibition at the center, senior members of the class shared their stories of how they started painting, how they have grown individually in their painting, and how the class has bonded together through the years.
"It's like they are an extended family," Wick said.
