Bethesda Home awarded grants to light walking path

Bethesda Home, Goessel, received two matching grants to complete a $30,205 path lighting project for the walking path in the Emma Creek Meadows Retirement Village on the Bethesda campus.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks provided the largest boost toward the completion of this project with an 80/20 matching grant totaling $24,164. The Wal-Mart Foundation contributed a $1,000 matching grant for funds raised by the community during an annual Benefit Meal/Talent Show event co-sponsored by Goessel Lions Club and Bethesda Home. An additional $1,000 was received from the Threshing Days Sand Volleyball Tournament participants and sponsors.

"This is an excellent example of multiple entities working together to complete a community project," said Jerry Hover, parks division director of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. "We like to support those kinds of efforts."

"Wal-Mart Foundation likes to be active in meeting community needs, particularly when various non-profit groups work together," said Shane Meier of the Newton Wal-Mart Super Center. "We are pleased to play a role in the completion of this significant community project."

The approximate four tenths mile-long ADA compliant walking path was constructed in the summer of 2000 at a cost of $50,000 and made possible by an initial 80/20 matching grant from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks of which 20 percent, or $10,000 of contributions, came from various memorial gifts, individual donations, and fundraising events sponsored by Bethesda Home.

"It is very gratifying for Bethesda Home to cooperate with so many organizations and to be able to provide walking path facilities for our residents and for the entire community to enjoy. The community has provided such strong support for Bethesda for over 100 years and these paths on our campus are our gift back to the community," said Pete Flaming director of marketing/development at Bethesda.

"We thank everyone who contributed to this major project," he added.
