Betty Jean Fisher

Betty Jean Homan Fisher was born Jan. 13, 1929, at Peabody, the daughter of Franklin J. and Goldie A. (Suffield) Homan.

Growing up on the family farm, Betty attended country elementary school and graduated from Peabody High School in 1947.

Betty married Douglas W. Fisher on June 29, 1947, and the young couple settled on the family farm near Peabody. Betty and Douglas had two children, Dennis and Paula, and raised them in the same family farming tradition they had each enjoyed.

Not only did Betty work tirelessly as a partner on the farm, she also drove a school bus for many years. She was active in the Peabody community, and in fact during the early 1970s became the first city councilwoman for the city of Peabody.

When the children were grown, Betty and Douglas moved to Meade for 10 years, and later Cheney for 10 years. Upon retirement, they moved to Haven to be near children and grandchildren.

Betty was active in the Congregational United Methodist Church of Christ in Haven, and belonged to the Mayflower Circle. When able, she played the organ for church services.

Her passion was flower and vegetable gardening. Her talents were appreciated by those who admired the flowers in her yard and received the many vegetables she and Douglas grew together.

Betty struggled with health issues in recent years, and died in the early hours of May 9, 206, with her husband and children at her side.

Betty's greatest love was the family she and her husband nurtured together. She leaves to mourn her husband of 58 years, Douglas W. Fisher; son, Dennis Fisher and daughter-in-law, Janet of Denton, Texas; daughter, Paula Scott and son-in-law, Mike of Haven; grandchildren, Alex Fisher and wife, Cathy of King George, Va., Emily Dickson and husband, Tim of Round Hill, Va., Andrew Fisher and wife, Shauna of Cumby, Texas, Christopher Scott of Haven, and Jessica Scott of New York City. She also cherished five great-grandchildren, and was preparing for two new ones on the way.

Other family members include a brother, Richard Homan of Holton; beloved in-laws, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Betty also leaves behind many good friends who she considered family.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning at Congregational United Church of Christ, Haven, with the Rev. Christian Tirre presiding.

Burial and graveside services were held Saturday afternoon at Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Peabody.

Memorials may be sent to the Haven Ambulance Fund in care of Van Campen Funeral Home, PO Box 217, Haven 67543.
