Big shoes to fill
There is no doubt that Hillsboro will miss Carol Wiebe.
Not that she's actually leaving the city limits. But her absence from the Chamber office is a huge blow to this city.
Carol Wiebe weathered some changes in her years working to promote Hillsboro. When she started work in 1981, she probably never envisioned the various name changes that her office would go through, right up to the formation of the Hillsboro Management Board in 1994.
Carol was always eager to promote Hillsboro, whether it was at the state Chamber meeting, the Sampler Festival in Independence, or the state fair booth.
And she knew her stuff. After more than 20 years immersed in economic development activities, she had to. She knew what the programs were, who the contacts were, and where the grant money was.
Carol knows this town, and she's proud of Hillsboro.
On a personal note, Carol was always very easy to work with. In a world that can be filled with rumors, gossip, and politics, she always struck me as an honest person — a straight-shooter.
But she's said it's time to move on.
Personally, I think there's more to this story. More than may ever reach newspaper print.
But that's not the purpose of this particular column.
This column is to say 'thank you' to a faithful worker committed to the growth of Hillsboro.
She leaves huge shoes to fill.
