Big third quarter pushes Lady Trojans past Ellinwood
The Hillsboro High School Lady Trojans used a 17-4 third quarter Friday night to grind out a 44-25 victory at Ellinwood.
The victory squared up the Trojans' record at 4-4 on the season and 2-0 in the Mid-Central Activities Association.
The Eagles stayed in the game through the first, trailing just 8-6 after one quarter and 17-10 at halftime.
The lead widened to 34-14 after the explosive third quarter and Ellinwood never posed a threat to the Trojans.
Dakota Kaufman and Amanda Faber combined for 33 points with Kaufman scoring a game-high 18.
Nickerson
The Trojans suffered a setback Jan. 7 in the Dec. 14 makeup game at Nickerson, stumbling 40-24.
Hillsboro had a balanced scoring attack, but no one managed more than six points on the night with the Trojans shooting a chilling 36 percent from the floor with 24 turnovers.
Nickerson stayed in control of the contest, pulling in front after the first quarter 14-9, and keeping Hillsboro out of striking distance.
The Panthers edged the Trojans in every phase of the game, shooting just less than 50 percent from the floor.
Kaufman and Amy Neufeld combined for 12 points with team-highs of six points each.
The Trojans faced the Sunrise Academy Lady Buffaloes Tuesday for the first round game of the Trojan Classic in Hillsboro.
The tournament runs through Saturday.
