Bluebird basketball: Girls upset by Peabody, boys survive OT

Girls' game

The Goessel varsity girls' basketball team was surprised by the Peabody-Burns Warriors 40-32 Friday on the road.

In their first defeat this season, the Bluebirds led 12-5 at the end of the first quarter and 21-15 at the end of the first half. They came out cold in the second half and were outscored 25-11.

The duo of Tara Goerzen and Melinda Stucky, who have combined for as many as 34 points in games this season, accounted for 14 points, eight and six respectively. Stucky, who had one field goal, was four for four from the free throw line.

Lindsey Unruh also scored six points with a perfect three for three in field goals. Other scorers were Candice Bailey, Brittany Goerzen, and Darla Funk with four points each.

The Warriors' Gretchen Berns led all scorers with 16 points.

The Lady Bluebirds are now 5-1 and will play at Moundridge on Jan. 3 and at Burrton on Jan. 7.

Boys' game

The Goessel boys' varsity basketball team edged out the Peabody Warriors 74-67 in overtime Friday at Peabody.

The Bluebirds took a 25-24 lead into halftime. The lead exchanged hands in the second half, ending with a 64-all tie. In the overtime, Goessel outscored Peabody 10-3.

Four Goessel players ended the game in double digits. Kent Peters led all scorers with 22 points, including five threes. Other Goessel scorers were Jeremy Voth with 18 points; Clinton Plenert, 13; Jesse Goertzen, 11; Aaron Stehman and Ben Schmidt, four each; and Ryan Janzen, two.

Peabody-Burns, led by Philip Unruh with 20 points, also had four players in double digits.

Goessel travels to Moundridge Jan. 3 and to Burrton Jan. 7.
