Bluebird Boys trounce Moundridge

Goessel High School boys' basketball team notched a victory Friday against Moundridge in its season-opening game.

Goessel only led by eight points at half time, but its defense helped extend the lead throughout the second half.

"Our depth was an asset tonight," said head coach Justin Coup, "and that should be for the year."

The Bluebirds out-rebounded the Wildcats 28-24, but the Bluebird defense held Moundridge to only 25 percent shooting from the field and forced the Wildcats into 22 turnovers.

Garrett Hiebert led the Bluebirds in scoring with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Travis Buller scored 10 points and had three steals. Tyler Schroeder scored seven, Nathan Ensz had six points, and two blocked shots. Jordan Voth scored four, Brett Goerzen added four points and three steals in the victory.

Goessel led at the breaks 10-8, 24-16, 36-26 and a final score of 50-32.

"I believe we saw good and bad things tonight, but this is a great start for the season," said Coup.

The Goessel junior varsity boys also beat Moundridge 47-34. Nathan Amstutz put in 15 points and Kurtis Duerksen added 10.

Goessel will be involved in an early season tournament this week with games at Argonia, Goessel, and Oxford.

Tuesday against Berean Academy will be the last home game until January.
