Bluebird girls' team will be inexperienced

The Goessel girls will be short on experience as they begin the 2004 campaign. Most of the scoring last year came from three players that return to this year's team.

Kory Hiebert will anchor the team with her play around the bucket, Courtney Berkholz will play forward and handle the ball at times, Candice Bailey will get points with defensive steals and converting layups, and senior Felicia Goertzen will be depended on for ball handling skills.

Coach Brian Holloway is hoping for a number of other girls to become scoring threats and help the team in a variety of ways.

"We have the quickness to play tough defense, but the question will be if we have enough weapons on offense," he said.

As often happens in high school sports, someone with less experience steps up her game to make a significant contribution to the varsity program. Seventeen girls have reported for this year's team. Coach Holloway hopes this year's team improves on the three HOA wins from last year.

The Heart of America league now is 11 teams. The season starts Dec. 6 with a home game with Moundridge. However, the games that count for league standings begin Dec. 21 at Inman. Holloway is assisted this year by Allen Pinkall.
