Four days before competing in the Tescott tournament, Goessel High School volleyball team played host Sept. 11 to a home tournament.
The Remington Broncos and Goessel tangled in the evening's first match.
Remington won game one 25-20, then dominated the second game, 25-12.
Inman, one of the toughest teams in the Heart of America League, was Goessel's next opponent. The Teutons also won in two games, 25-19, 25-16.
"We were able to put small runs together," a disappointed head coach Crysta Guhr said, "but we just could not sustain anything."
The Bluebirds traveled Saturday to Tescott for a tournament.
"We played our best volleyball of the season Saturday morning," said Guhr.
The Bluebirds went undefeated in pool play, and the three victories evened their season record at 8-8.
However two close losses in bracket play gave them fourth place and an overall season record of 8-10.
Goessel defeated Lucas-Luray 25-14, 25-18, and beat Wilson 23-25, 25-19, 25-18, before sneaking by Ell Saline 25-20 and 29-27.
In the afternoon the Bluebirds could not buy a victory.
GHS lost to Bennington 19-25, 25-17, 23-25, and lost to Osborne 17-25, 25-23, 15-25.
Coach Guhr highlighted the excellent net play of Rinda Duerksen who ended with 50 kills for the tournament.
Karina Harvey also caught the eye of the coach.
"She took hold of the defense and was everywhere," said Guhr.
Harvey ended the day with 28 digs.
Jessica Goertzen led the team with 103 assists and Aspen Frey made good on 43-of-44 serves for the tournament.
Goessel played at Moundridge Tuesday and will play Saturday in the Olpe tournament.
