Goessel High School volleyball coach Crysta Guhr remained upbeat Sept. 25 in her comments following two victories at the Goessel gym even though the team did not put everything together on the court.

"We have been working on playing consistently for longer periods of time," she said. "That is what we did tonight. This team is young and they won even when it looked like Peabody was coming back."

In the first match at the Bluebird gym, Berean defeated Peabody 25-21, 25-23.

Goessel came out fired up against Berean and led 18-8 after the first rotation and rolled on to a victory 25-10.

In the second game with Berean, Goessel outscored the Warriors in the middle of the game 5-1, and took a 17-13 lead.

But Berean scored four straight points to tie the game at 17 and the Bluebirds went on the attack with Jessica Goertzen serving, Karis Janzen hitting hard at the net, and Katie Flaming diving for balls.

Goessel won the second game 25-20.

The Bluebirds started strong against Peabody, jumping to a 14-4 lead, but sloppy play for the Bluebirds and aggressive play for Warriors, turned into eight straight points for Peabody.

With Amy Brubaker in the serve position, the tide suddenly turned and the Bluebirds scored seven straight, taking a 22-13 lead and then finished the first game 25-16.

The Bluebirds were playing well into the second game, leading 14-9 when the feathers started coming apart.

Peabody scored 13 straight points and even with two time-outs during that stretch, Goessel was unable to change the momentum. Peabody won game two, 25-18.

In game three, the Warriors continued to play aggressively to start the game and led 8-1.

The Bluebirds tied the game 10-10 and with Jennifer Raymond serving, the home team scored six straight points.

But the Warriors mounted another attack and took a short-lived lead 22-21. Each team traded points in a tense finish to another match.

With Goessel leading 24-23, a Peabody serving error finished the match and the Bluebirds picked up a victory in the Heart of America League win.

Leaders for the night were Goertzen with 37 assists, and Rinda Duerksen with 21 kills and nine blocks.

Karina Harvey led in digs with 17, and Raymond was 32 -32 serving.

"I am so happy, especially for the senior girls, to have played their last home matches and picked up two wins," Guhr said.

Goessel ends this week 4-5 in the league and 13-14 overall.
