Bluebirds compete at Halstead meet

GHS faces 2A, 3A, 4A schools at event

The Goessel Bluebirds made a showing at the 33rd Halstead Conrad Nightingale Invitational last Friday. As the only 1A team to compete in the invitational, the girls finished 13th and the boys 12th out of 17 teams.

"I told our kids that as tough as this meet was, we'll see most of these place-winners at state in 2A, 3A, and 4A," said coach Brian Stucky. "The kids should be proud just to make it into the finals in these events."

Melinda Stucky won the high jump with a jump of five feet. Jennifer Schmidt placed third in the long jump, and Darla Funk placed sixth in the pole vault.

"Melinda jumped very well early then over-adjusted later," Stucky said. "We thought she might go higher today."

In boys' competition, freshman Justin Fensky placed third in both the long jump and triple jump, and Peter Goerzen, fifth in the long jump.

"Justin Fensky is doing amazingly well for a freshman," Stucky said. "Both long jump and triple jump were freshmen class records."

Goessel participated Tuesday in a quint at Moundridge and will participate Friday at the Hillsboro Invitational.
