Bluebirds fail to gain three-peat

The Goessel volleyball team lost at sub-state last Saturday in Cunningham to Caldwell, the number one team in the state, 7-15 and 4-15.

"It was a very disappointing to lose because we had a goal of returning to state for three years in a row," said coach Sandy Banman.

The Bluebirds struggled to score early in each match. Caldwell had some good hitters, and as the match went on, Goessel got better at digging up their spikes.

Lindsey Unruh led with five kills. As a team, the Bluebirds only missed one serve.

"We had a great season at 30-5, the best record that a Goessel volleyball team has ever had," Banman said. "Our loses came from three different teams, two that are in the state tournament."

The Bluebirds made it into the second round sub-state by defeating Lucas-Luray 15-12, 15-9 in their first match of the day.
