The Goessel High School boys' basketball team narrowly missed toppling another league leader Jan. 4 when they traveled to Remington. The final score was 78-67, but Goessel was within four points with just under three minutes left.
The Bluebirds hit six three-pointers in the first half to give them a half time lead of 37-31. Remington took the lead in the third quarter, and their defensive pressure caused some problems for the Bluebirds.
The Broncos jumped to a 12-point lead, but Goessel outscored the home team 9-3 to narrow the gap at 61-65. The Bluebirds attempted a full court press, but Remington scored some easy baskets to finish the game with two lay ups. Goessel finished the night shooting 14 of 18 free throws, but Remington went 20 of 28 from the stripe.
Scoring for Goessel were Kent Peters with 21, Jeremy Voth 20, Clinton Plenert 13, Aaron Stehman seven, and Jesse Goertzen six.
Goessel is 3-2 in the league and 4-4 overall. The Bluebirds played at home Tuesday against Moundridge and will play at home Friday against Central Christian.
