Bluebirds send three to state track meet

The Goessel Bluebirds claimed two state medals at the State Track Meet at Wichita May 30.

Melinda Stucky took fourth place in high jump with a jump of 5'2". According to Melinda, she did not jump to her potential but was happy to medal.

Ben Goering met his personal record in the pole vault with a 12'6" jump and a fourth-place tie. Goering just missed the school record of 12'9".

"I was satisfied but have greater hopes for next year," Goering said.

Freshman Justin Fensky did not place in the triple jump.

"I was kind of disappointed I didn't jump farther, but I'd like to come back and get first by my senior year," Fensky said.

According to coach Brian Stucky, all athletes felt the hot and muggy humidity on Friday.

"Although we took only three athletes to state," said coach Sandy Banman, "this is a young team with much potential for future years."

At the class 1A regional at Fredonia May 23, M. Stucky took first in high jump with a jump of 5'4"; Goering was first in pole vault with a vault of 11'6"; and Fensky was second in the triple jump with a jump of 40'7 3/4".

Other competitors at regionals, who did not make it to state, included Peter Goerzen in the triple jump, 40' 7 3/4"; Darla Funk in pole vault, fifth, 7'; Jennifer Schmidt, 100m, fifth, 13.5 and long jump, sixth, 14'8".

This appearance at the state meet marks the end of coach Brian Stucky's 24-year tenure as track coach at Goessel High School. Stucky will continue teaching in the Goessel school district.
