In the first football game of the season, Goessel defeated Norwich 32-30 in a close contest on a beautiful evening.

Dustin Peterson scored the first touchdown for the Bluebirds 2007 season from three yards out. A pass from Austin Unruh connected with Weston Hiebert for the extra points.

Goessel scored again in the second period on a 29-yard pass play from Unruh to Craig Banman. The Bluebirds trailed at half time, 14-16.

Norwich scored 14 unanswered points in the third quarter and the Bluebirds trailed 14-30 at the end of the third quarter.

Austin Unruh then scampered in from eight and five yards to get the Bluebirds within one touchdown.

The Bluebird defense successfully held Norwich out of the end-zone in the fourth quarter. Kendall Voth grabbed a nine yard pass from Unruh for the winning touchdown.

Two huge defensive stops in the fourth quarter allowed the Bluebirds to take over the ball on downs and continue their come-back efforts. With less than two minutes to play Goessel gained enough yards to keep the clock moving, in order to preserve their first win of the season.

Goessel learned that the larger players on the Eagle line prevented the running game to be successful. The Bluebirds found success through the air as four different players caught passes in the game. Goessel gained 71 yards on the ground and 184 yards through the air.

Goessel (1-0) will be at home at 7 p.m. Friday with Hartford (1-0) and at home Sept. 14 with Wichita Trinity (1-0).
