Bluejay harriers compete at Winfield

Lady Bluejays finish 14th, men 20th

Tabor College cross country teams got an excellent tuneup Saturday for both the Oct. 27 KCAC conference and the Nov. 3 regional meet, competing at Winfield in the NAIA's Mid-State Classic meet hosted by Southwestern College.

The Lady Bluejays, paced by an eighth-place finish by Liz Kleinsasser (19:16), captured 14th place out of 31 competing colleges with 368 points.

Of the seven KCAC schools competing, only Southwestern beat Tabor, finishing three places and 66 points ahead.

Wayland Baptist ran away with the women's title, 19 points ahead than runner-up Mid America-Nazarene's 82.

"Liz ran an outstanding race and on this day, she was the first conference runner to cross the finish line," Tabor coach Karol Hunt said. "Her performance was especially satisfying because eighth is the highest finish we have had at this meet."

Heidi Schmidt was second for the Bluejays (48th, 20:30) and Amber Wiens returned to take 101st out of 210 finishers in 21:24.

"It was positive to have Amber back to racing," Hunt said. "Her experience is invaluable to us. The day was a challenge for the women. Early in the race, officials discovered that the lead pack inadvertently cut the course. The race was stopped at the one-mile mark and restarted after the men's race and the women actually ended up running an extra mile in race mode. We rose to the challenge in good fashion."

The men's 543 points left them in 20th.

Colorado College won the men's class, edging second-place Oklahoma Baptist.

Zac Remboldt, Justin Ball, and Dan Sigley paced the men with 111th (29:22), 115th (29:29), and 130th (29:45) place finishes in their second fastest times of the season.

"This was our final tune-up before the conference meet," Hunt said. "We performed well today."

The Bluejays can only hope they're ready for the KCAC meet Oct. 27 with action at Cottonwood Point at Marion Reservoir.

The women run at 10:30 a.m. with the men starting at 11:15.
