Bluejay harriers wrap up season
Women's team finishes 11th
at regionals; men are 18th
The Tabor cross country team wrapped up the season Saturday at the Region VI meet at Pioneer's Park in Lincoln, Neb.
Squaring off against the regions' top programs including top-ranked Concordia, the Lady Bluejays finished 11th out of 24 teams with 280 points.
Concordia won both the men's and women's competition in landslides with the women outdistancing runner-up Northwestern by 88 points.
One highlight for the Lady Bluejays was finishing the highest of KCAC teams, beating champion Kansas Wesleyan by 27.
In the men's division, Concordia beat out Doane for the top spot, 37-73, with the Bluejays finishing 18th with 486 points.
"The women had an outstanding racing day with all five turning in quicker times than a week ago," Tabor coach Karol Hunt said. "The regional competition is pretty tough and we ran against the top-ranked NAIA team in the country, but when compared to the KCAC, the women came in first as a team.
"This group of women accomplished a lot this season."
Running her final race of an outstanding career, Angie Jost posted the highest finish for the women with a 24th place time of 20:40.
Heidi Schmidt closed out a remarkable freshman season with a 21:07 finish for 36th.
Amber Wiens took 56th out of 142 finishers in 21:32, Tiffany Stevens was 107th (23:12,) and Rebekah Lockhart came in 124th in 24:21.
The men had a rough day all the way around.
Out of 159 finishers, Anthony Bartlett ended the year with a 103rd place time of 30:50.
Kevin Larson finished second for Tabor at 109th in 31:10.
Matt Lynam took 118th (31:43,) Michael Norris, 129th (32:07,) and Jeff Anenson came in 156th in 37:01.
"Kevin and Matt were our bright spots," Hunt said. "Both ran gutsy, focused races.
"Angie is the only runner we lose to graduation. Angie has become a coach's dream and a mainstay on the team these last four years. Her shoes will be difficult to fill.
"All of the others should return along with those out with injuries (Kendra Raber and Jennie Throne.)
"Overall, we were young teams this year so the experience will pay huge dividends for the future."
