Bluejay soccer has fifth shutout

Tabor College men's soccer has its fifth shut out of the year, leaving the team tied for first place in the KCAC. The men beat Southwestern in Winfield last Wednesday two to zero and St. Mary's on Monday at home two to zero.

According to Lincoln Wulf, head men's soccer coach, the game Wednesday against Southwestern was mostly positive but still not a full 90-minute performance from Tabor.

"We came out as strong as we had all year," said Wulf. "One of the real bright spots was David Fast, a senior from Sau Paulo, Brazil. Against Southwestern he came in about half way through the first half and really lit it up for us. He scored both goals off assists from Grant Brubacher in a span of about three minutes."

Wulf said the second half of the game wasn't as positive. The team had several chances to score but couldn't get the ball in the net. Southwestern had some close calls that according to Wulf made it a very tense game.

"We were able to kill them off effectively in the end, keeping most of their chances 25-30 yards out. They just never got a decent look at goal thanks to our mid-field defense

and our back line," said Wulf.

Last year St. Mary's beat Tabor eight to zero, and according to Wulf their team came out fired up to win.

"I think their expectation was to do something similar this year," said Wulf.

A foul on Tim Satterfield, a junior from Wichita, set Chris Adrian, a freshman from Hesston, up for a free kick. Grant Brubacher headed the ball in at the far post, scoring the team's first goal against St. Mary's for the game, and his seventh goal of the year. Brubacher is leading the KCAC in goals scored this year.

The second half of the game was back and forth but Tabor had better chances to score, according to Wulf. With 10 minutes left in the half, Brian Unruh, a freshman from Valley Center, scored his first goal of the season off a run made by Brubacher.

"St. Mary never really threatened our goal after that," said Wulf. "Our defense was spectacular from mid-field back."

Tabor men's soccer is 4-0 in the KCAC conference, and 6-5 overall. The men will play an alumni scrimmage at 11 a.m. Saturday for homecoming and will play Bethany at 4 p.m. Monday at home.
