Bluejay women's basketball season off to a strong start

Tabor women's basketball team opens season 3-1

The 2003-04 season has gotten off on the right foot for the Lady Bluejays, a team picked to finish third in the KCAC.

So far this season, Tabor is 3-1, its only loss coming Nov. 18 in Wichita against Kansas Newman.

The Bluejays spent the weekend competing in Sterling's Classic, going 2-0.

And neither game was close with Tabor cruising to wins.

In Friday's first game against Central Christian, a team Tabor beat the first game of the year Nov. 11 in McPherson, Erica Hemmert canned two triples en route to a game-high 19 points.

The Bluejays led 37-13 at halftime, eventually crushing the Lady Tigers, 89-34.

LaTasha Townsend added 14 points for the Bluejays, who hit 51 percent from the field while holding Central to a ragged 26 percent.

In Saturday's finale against MidAmerica Christian, Tabor coach Rusty Allen got a balanced scoring attack from Rachelle Wertenberger, Hemmert, Nicole Ellis, Trixsi Odom, and Angela Kroeker to smash the Lady Evangels, 105-54.

Wertenberger scored a season-high 21 amidst going 4 for 4 beyond the arc, Hemmert drained 3 of 4 from downtown for 15 points, Ellis scored 14 while Odom and Kroeker combined for 18.

Tabor, also benefitting by 41 points off 34 Evangel turnovers, used a scorching 58 percent shooting to race to a 55-26 lead at halftime and never looked back.

After traveling Tuesday to Baldwin City, Tabor will spend Friday and Saturday in Seward, Neb., competing in Concordia University's Cattle Classic.

Tabor opens the Classic Friday against perennial powerhouse Concordia at 7 p.m.

The Bluejays' conclude the Classic Saturday with a 1 p.m. tipoff time against York College.

Due to the holiday and early publication date, results from Tuesday's game against Baker were not available at the time of publication.
