Bluejays place in top 20 at NAIA meet years ago
Three Tabor College track and field athletes participated in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Olathe May 22 to 24.
Tamara McCarren, Clifton, placed fourteenth in the discus competition when she threw it 136'5".
The top point scorer for the Tabor women in field events each of the past three years during regular season, McCarren also throws the shot put, hammer and javelin. She is currently the Tabor College record holder in the women's discus and women's hammer.
"Tammy has been a real asset to our track and field program over the past three seasons, and I am looking forward to a great senior campaign next spring from her," said head coach David Kroeker. "She came to Tabor from a good track program at Clifton-Clyde and has gotten better every year."
A two-time KCAC high jump champion, Mandi (Whitehead) Janzen, of Lyons, placed eleventh in the women's high jump, clearing 5'3" but going out at 5'5".
"Mandi really came on this season in the high jump setting personal records both at the conference meet and a week later at a meet at Emporia," said Kroeker. "She really did a great job. She competed well in big meets."
The third athlete to participate, Landon Goertzen, Henderson, Neb., placed twelfth in the nation in the men's 800M where he ran 1:53.34. He is currently the Tabor College record holder at 1:53.2. During the last three weeks of the season, he shaved more than 2.5 seconds off his 800M time.
"Landon is just the consummate competitor," said Kroeker. "He trains hard, and he runs tough. I think he is only going to get faster, and that will really be fun to watch next year."
