Both Chamber office employees resign within one month

In the span of one month, both employees at the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce office have resigned.

Carol Wiebe, director, is the latest to leave the office. Her last day on the job was Monday.

Wiebe handed in her resignation on Monday, Oct. 21, which gave the required 10 days' notice, Wiebe said.

Wiebe was an employee of the Hillsboro Management board. The HMB encompasses a variety of Hillsboro promotional organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce, the Hillsboro Development Corporation, the Marion County Fair Board, and the Arts and Crafts Association.

Wiebe served as director of the HMB in the Chamber office on South Main. She follows Rhonda Toal, who resigned from her job as the office's administrative assistant a couple weeks earlier.

Wiebe has worked for the HMB since its formation in 1993, but she has been involved in the Hillsboro Chamber and various economic activities since 1981.

The job has been enjoyable, she said. But now it's time for other things.

"It's time for me to move on," Wiebe said.

Since Wiebe gave her resignation to Darrel Driggers, head of the HMB, she's been working with Chamber president Jeanie Reiswig to get down on paper all the activities of the office, she said.

Reiswig has been a huge help during the transition period, Wiebe said.

Wiebe's not sure what lies ahead, she said.

"I don't like the word 'retirement,'" Wiebe said.

To fill the vacancies, the HMB has "just now" started looking for new workers, Darrel Driggers said on Monday.

For the interim period, a temporary office worker will answer the Chamber office phones. According to Wiebe, that person is Helen McMinn.

But the HMB may not hire two people to fill the jobs of Wiebe and Toal, Driggers said.

Although there is definitely enough work for two people to do, budget constraints may force the HMB to hire just one person, Driggers said.

He declined to comment on whether or not he was surprised at Wiebe's resignation.

Driggers said that the HMB had the "utmost admiration" for the job that Wiebe has done.

"We'll certainly miss her," he said.
