The Goessel boys' basketball team dug themselves into a hole in the first half against Berean Tuesday, trailing by as many as 14 points. The Bluebirds, playing on their home court, lost to Berean 48-51.
Goessel's only lead in the game was 1-0. They then played "catch up" the rest of the game.
Several times in the third and fourth quarters, Goessel got within four points. Clinton Plenert hit a three pointer with 40 seconds to play. Berean was able to connect on three of four free throws, and the Bluebirds missed several three point attempts.
Plenert led the team with 17 points. Other scorers were Kent Peters with 12 points, Jeremy Voth with 10, and Jesse Goertzen with nine.
The boys are 5-4 in the HOA league and 8-7 overall.
You couldn't pick a more evenly played game than the Goessel/Burrton boys game on Jan 25. Each team had a 5-2 record at the start of the evening, but Burrton ended the game 6-2 with a 63-60 overtime win.
Burrton charged to a 26-15 lead in the second quarter, but Goessel scratched their way back into the game and trailed 31-29 at half-time. Plenert and Peters were the only Bluebirds to score in the third period as Goessel trailed 44-43.
Goessel grabbed the lead in the fourth quarter for the first time in the game and built the lead to 55-51 with one minute to play. Converting one of three free throws haunted the Bluebirds as regulation time ended in a tie 56-56.
Burrton scored four points in the overtime, and Voth scored from close range. Peters emerged from the bottom of a pile of bodies on an intentional foul on Burrton. He sank both free throws to tie the game again at 60-60 with 40 seconds to play.
Neither team scored for thirty-eight seconds. Burrton inbounded the ball with two seconds on the clock, and Josh Urban caught the pass, turned and shot from the three point range to score with 27 points and the winning basket. Burrton now sports an eight game winning streak.
Scoring for Goessel were Peters with 27 points, Plenert with 21, Voth with 10 and Goertzen with two.
Goessel will play two away games at Hutch Trinity on Friday and at Canton next Tuesday.
