Brazil sets example for all kids

Staff writer

Randy Brazil is in the middle of things, and he likes it that way. Whether it's at his job as a Marion County Sheriff or coaching his kids in sports, Brazil is definitely involved.

He has coached five sports this season. Football and soccer are done, but T-ball, blast ball, and coach pitch are all going on right now. Coach pitch and football are his favorite sports to coach.

"I can be more involved. I'm out in the middle of it," Brazil said. "I like being in the middle of things."

Brazil loves being involved in his kids' lives, but it isn't only since he had children that he's been involved.

"I did this before the kids," said Brazil. "I just like being involved with kids to set a good example."

Besides city recreation activities, Brazil also works with Special Olympics and is active with his church's youth.

Brazil and wife, Carolyn, have four kids, ages 10, 8, 6, and 3. They're all in sports, and Brazil coaches them all.

"I really like working with my kids, and it's hard sometimes, but you just have to organize yourself. I just like being involved in their lives and having a front row seat."

Originally from Norman, Okla., Brazil graduated from Tabor College and then went on to work for the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

"I wanted the excitement and like being able to help people. There's always something going on and a lot of problem solving," Brazil said.

As a sheriff's officer, Brazil sees a lot of the bad in people. Coaching gives him a chance to set a good example for kids and be involved in a positive activity.

"There are so many bad influences out there," said Brazil. He's able to use his job experience to help the kids in other ways as well. "You know about the drug issues and can tell the kids the effect it has on family life and sports. Drugs take away your ability to play."

Being a cop may help as a coach Brazil said. "I think the kids listen more, and it's nice for them to see me in two different roles. There have been a lot of kids, and everyone is different. Everyone has a special trait."

Brazil has always been athletic and feels it is important to have his kids in sports.

"Sports builds self discipline and character," said Brazil.

Not only does he see sports as an important part of life but as a way to avoid future problems.

"This is one way to keep kids out of trouble. I've noticed that the ones that aren't involved are the ones that are out there causing trouble and doing drugs."
