Bud Bruce Memorial Golf Tournament sponsored by KPA
The Kansas Newspaper Foundation Bud Bruce Memorial Golf Tournament was held Saturday and Sunday at Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan. The event was co-sponsored by the Manhattan Mercury.
The tournament was named for the late Bud Bruce of Hillsboro, former owner/publisher of the Hillsboro Star-Journal and a player in the KPA golf tournament for years. Marcella Bruce from Hillsboro, his wife and co-owner of the paper, and Marcia Wiederstein from Florida, his daughter, attended the dinner on Saturday evening.
Jay Lowell of the Concordia Blade-Empire was the overall winner, winning the championship flight with an 18-hole score of 78. Jim Lowell won the first flight; John G. Montgomery, publisher of the Junction City Daily Union, the second flight; and Vivien Sadowski, retired publisher of the Abilene Reflector-Chronicle, the third flight. The four flight winners from Sunday's member tournament will represent KPA in the Little Brown Jug golf tournament between members of the Kansas and Missouri press associations.
Forty-eight golfers played in Saturday's four-person, 18-hole scramble. The winning foursome was a corporate-sponsor team from Chili's Grill and Bar.
