Bulebirds soar in lopsided victory
Goessel scored 40 points in the first half and then finished the football game early in the fourth quarter by defeating Chase 68-22. The Bluebirds used thirty-nine running plays and only nine passing plays to defeat the guests from Rice County. Goessel scored three touchdowns in the first quarter with Dylan Buller going five yards, Justin Fensky running eight yards, and Josh Schmidt catching an Aaron Stehman six-yard pass. Chase managed one touchdown in the first period. In the second quarter, big plays gave Goessel three more touchdowns. Wayne Cooper romped 47 yards, Garrett Hiebert connected with Stehman on a 36-yard TD pass play, and Hiebert got loose on a 66-yard sprint for a TD. The visitors managed another touchdown before half-time making the score 40-14 in favor of the Bluebirds. Two more touchdowns in the third quarter by the Bluebird seniors Stehman and Buller gave Goessel a 54-22 lead going into the final period. Dylan Buller scored again on a 10 yard run and freshman Travis Buller ended the game by crossing the goal line on a three yard plunge. The forty-five point rule came into play with the Bluebirds on top 68-22.
Although Goessel was whistled for 84 yards in penalties, Coach Coup was very pleased with the offensive line allowing the Bluebirds to accumulate 482 yards of total offense. "We moved the ball down the field because of the job the offensive line, " said Coup. Goessel will host Pretty Prairie in a Heart of America League game on Sep. 19. The Bluebirds evened their record at 1-1 for the season after losing to highly ranked Sylvan Grove the previous week.
