Chamber luncheon combines with school district

Members of the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce and the Durham-Hillsboro-Lehigh school district converged Aug. 14 at noon for the Chamber's monthly meeting.

New teachers Dustin Dalke, Tim Kilgore, Sharon Jost, and Jill Brown were recognized at the meeting. Dalke and Kilgore will be teaching at the high school, and Jost will be teaching part-time third-grade reading and math. Brown is a special-ed teacher employed by the Marion County Special Education Cooperative.

Also at the meeting, Dr. Donna Bagley, education professor at Tabor College, gave a brief synopsis of the professional development schools program. The program allows Tabor education majors to gain classroom experience before they begin official student teaching.

The program, which starts this year, features three different "schools" — one at the elementary, one at the middle school, and one at the high school.

"Our No. 1 goal is to improve the learning of all students," Bagley said.

Hillsboro Elementary School principal Dr. Pat Call said that the program will allow Tabor students to pick up teaching tips before they actually hit their student teaching during their senior year.

A Tabor student majoring in education would start his or her education practicum as a sophomore, Call said.

Hillsboro High School Principal Dale Honeck said that the program will allow Tabor juniors to get to know the teachers they'll be student teaching under a year in advance.

"We can share our expertise; we can share our passion," Honeck said.
