Chamber nominates three for Hillsboro business of the year

The City of Hillsboro, Golden Heritage Foods, and Parkside Homes are the finalists for the 2006 Chamber Business of the Year award.

"All of these nominees for Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year are worthy of the honor, and are helping make Hillsboro a better place to live and work," said chamber director Christy Wulf.

The winner will be announced in February at the chamber's annual dinner.

According to a press release from chamber officials, Golden Heritage Foods earned its nomination for coordinating efforts to help victims of Hurricane Katrina; the City of Hillsboro for improvements made to local streets, the city airport, and the water treatment facility; and Parkside Homes for its innovation in providing a new model of care for senior citizens.

"Golden Heritage Foods went out of its way to organize emergency supplies for victims of hurricane Katrina in the Baton Rouge, La. area," the release read.

"The company facilitated the transport of four semi-trucks loaded with supplies, water, and food to the Gulf Coast area as part of their effort to help Katrina victims.

"We congratulate them on not only their efforts, but also for providing a way for the broader community to respond to the enormous needs of people in the Gulf Coast region."

About Parkside Homes, the press release reads, "Parkside was the winner of design awards from the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging and the American Institute of Architects for the design of its new care facility.

"The officials at Parkside Homes, Inc., have given dignity, respect, privacy, and choice back to their residents with the new facility. Each stand-alone facility includes 12 private patient rooms nestled into a 'Household' model that promotes a sense of a family-style residential living. . .."

The city earned its nomination for improvements both completed and in progress.

"The City of Hillsboro is helping to make our community better every day," the announcement reads, adding that many of the projects have been funded partially by grants the city applied for and received.

"The completion of the water facility project puts the city among the elite of small towns in Kansas. There also are new water lines and drainage for Tabor, two blocks of Adams Street has had improvements to drainage, water lines, and new street that includes diagonal parking on the west side.

"The city also is in the process of providing utilities and streets for the new Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church addition, and work on the taxiways and a heli-pad at the Hillsboro Municipal Airport has been completed."
