Chamber notes
By CHRISTY WULF
Director, Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce
It's the start of a brand new year, and time for resolutions and fresh starts.
I will be starting the Leadership Marion County Class this month, and expect to learn more about the county, its leaders, and how we can work together to help each other. As a small community that's one of our biggest assets; the ability to work together.
Although you may be in competition with the business down the street, they are also a friend, a neighbor, or a member of the same church, so you don't want to see their business fail.
That's why we all pull for each other, work together, and shop in town to make Hillsboro better and stronger.
A tight-knit business community helps each other when times are tough, and that's the kind of community that people want to move to, live in, and raise their children in.
Working together makes us all better.
Here are January's top 10 reasons to be a chamber member:
10. The chamber director is in contact with Department of Commerce representatives.
9. Having your voice heard in planning and development.
8. A great networking tool.
7. Contacts.
6. Chamber spokesperson for your business.
5. $20,340 chamber gift certificates sold in 2006.
4. Educational opportunities
3. Hundreds of telephone recommendations given out each month.
2. Strength in numbers.
1. The unparalleled enthusiasm of the chamber director!
Did you know that the chamber of commerce sells more than $20,000 chamber gift certificates annually? These gift certificates are good at any chamber member business. They're a great way to give a gift and keep our dollars in Hillsboro. Gift certificates given to employees as part of a safety program, length of service award program, or achievement award program are tax deductible. For more information, go to www.irs.gov and check out publication 535.
Keep watching the chamber website. I've been working on it almost daily, and it's starting to look a lot different. The site address is www.hillsboro-kansas.com, and all chamber members are listed in the business directory. If you have comments, questions, or suggestions, let me know at hillsborochamber@hillsboro-kansas.com.
As income tax time approaches, did you ever notice that when you put the words "The" and "IRS" together it spells "THEIRS"?
