City council considers land purchase

Goessel City Council met Jan. 15 at the Goessel Civic Center in the conference room.

Arlen Goertzen, public works director, reported that he had contacted Floyd Nickel about purchasing some land from him for the sewer system project to put in another cell. Schwab-Eaton, engineering firm working on the project, will come out and do a survey of the land and determine how much land is needed. They will not set the pins, but they will supply a surveyor with the data file.

Discussion was held on where to relocate the burnsite and compost pile. The best location would be east of the new cell.

Goertzen also reported that the new pickup has been equipped with running boards and a utility light, and a bedliner has been sprayed in the back.

May Peggy Jay questioned the progress of the new street between Marion Avenue and Centennial Drive. The telephone company needs to move a service pedestal before work can begin on the construction of the street.

Goertzen said he will contact them again.

Mayor Jay read a letter from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks congratulating Anita Goertzen on her acceptance into the IIMC Master Municipal Clerk Academy Program.

Four bids were receieved for the custodian job. Two bids were for $10 per hour, one for $9 per hour and one for a flat rate of $150 per month.

The bids varied on who would pay for the cleaning supplies.

A motion was made to approve the bid with a per hour rate and the person furnishing the cleaning supplies.

Council agreed by consensus not to pay the membership dues to the Kansas Mayors Association at this time.

The council voted 5-0 to accept Resolution 04-01 stating that the City of Goessel shall cause its financial statements and financial reports to be prepared on the basis of cash receipts and disbursements instead of the general accepted accounting principals.

James Voth has completed his term on the Marion County Economic Council and has chosen not to accept another term.

The council discussed possible replacements, and Anita Goertzen will contact them to see if they are interested.

In other business:

— Racquel Thiesen voiced her concern over the proposed new position for a county coordinator for economic development. She questioned if the smaller towns in the county would benefit from this.

— The council chose several dates as options to meet with the Bethesda Board for a dialogue session on the issue of exempt property. Mayor Jay will contact Pete Flaming at Bethesda to set a date.

— Entertainment for the Main Street Event was discussed since the band Cactus Jack has disbanded. Several suggestions were made, and Anita Goertzen will follow up on them.

— Larry Lindeman questioned the procedure for hooking up to the city's sewer system if the property is not in the city limits.

The council agreed that the property would have to be annexed before it would be allowed to receive city sewer service.
