City decides on new employee insurance

In a special meeting of the Hillsboro City Council on Wednesday, Sept. 18, two issues were discussed: employee health insurance and the Adobe House shed roof.

According to the unapproved minutes of the meeting, City Administrator Steve Garrett received a bid from Flory Roofing and Construction for repairs on the south slope of the Adobe House shed roof. Flory Roofing is affiliated with Wray Roofing of Newton.

The bid for the project was $5,586. It was unanimously approved by the Council.

Also at the meeting, the Council decided on a new health insurance plan for city employees.

At the Sept. 17 meeting, council members had approved an option that would raise basic single coverage from $167.08 per month to $201.65 per month. That amount is paid entirely by the city.

But the next day, the city learned that the information concerning the difference insurance choices was incorrect. Mayor Delores Dalke felt that another option, labeled "Option 5," would be a better choice for keeping the city within its budget.

This plan was approved unanimously by the Council.

The new insurance plan costs the city $187.81 per month for single coverage — an increase of $20 per month.

It doesn't require a co-pay for office visits, but it does have a $200 deductible for primary care physician visits and referrals, and a 50/50 coinsurance payment after that.
