City discusses Main St. snag

The Hillsboro City Council held a special meeting at noon on Tuesday to discuss a snag in the Main Street project.

Todd Jost, owner of Jost Welding, and Karl Jost, owner of the building, attended the meeting to discuss the issue of replacing their current driveway on Main Street with curbing. The driveway was scheduled to be replaced with a curb which the Josts said would be detrimental to their business.

The problem for the council was that even as it was meeting, the street crews were pouring curbing.

According to the Josts, they were under the impression all along that they would have a driveway. Unfortunately, the driveway was not included in the street plans.

"I need the front driveway for my business," said Todd Jost. "I assumed the driveway would be put in. If it isn't, I will experience some loss of business. Somebody should have mentioned to me that I would not have a front driveway. It is a substantive change."

According to Mayor Delores Dalke, engineer Bob Previtera said that keeping the driveway would not interfere with the lighting pattern. But Previtera is concerned about the brick pattern which was never intended to be driven on.

"A new driveway will have to meet ADA requirements," said Dalke. "This is on our watch, and we need to have the engineer look at it."

According to Jimmy Smith, project inspector, putting in the curbing now and removing it later would not be major construction.

The council and the Josts came to the consensus that the curb would be poured now and removed later to replace the eight foot driveway.
