City joins lawsuit against governor's budget cuts

The Hillsboro City Council voted Wednesday to join litigation challenging Gov. Bill Graves' authority to cut $48,000 in demand transfer payments to cities and counties.

During a special meeting, commissioners gave the go-ahead for the city to be named as one of the participants in a lawsuit filed by the Kansas League of Municipalities.

Mayor Delores Dalke told commissioners league officials believe only legislators have the authority to cut demand transfer payments.

"Not the governor," she said. "So, the more cities that sign on the more of an impact we'll make."

The city of Hillsboro is expected to lose $135,000 in state revenue. There's no financial obligation for cities in joining the litigation, Dalke reported.

The Kansas Association of Counties is expected to join the KLM in the litigation.

Monday, the City of Marion voted to join the KLM litigation, and Marion County Commission also voted to join the KAC action.
