City pays final bills of Washington Street project
Final bills for the South Washington Street construction project were taken care of Oct. 1 at the Hillsboro City Council's first meeting of the month.
Tuesday evening, the council approved a final payment of $55,784.35 to APAC, a construction company based in Hutchinson. That includes an increase of approximately $5,000 from the original estimate for additional curb and gutter materials and an asphalt patch.
The total project cost hit $459,095.31. But the city is only obligated to pay the original estimate amount of $403,310.96.
The council also authorized a payment of $4,357.50 to Reiss and Goodness Engineers of Wichita for inspection fees.
Also at the council meeting, City Administrator Steve Garrett said that the search continues for a new city building inspector and code enforcement officer.
Hillsboro is looking for one person to fill both roles, Garrett said. The position will be full-time. That differs from the previous building inspector's job, which was only part-time. The previous inspector, Kermit Dirksen, had planned to resign his job at the end of the year, but health problems forced him to quit in late summer.
In other council business:
— Mark Brown and Wendell Dirks were named to two open seats on the board of the Hillsboro Community Medical Center. Both will serve three-year terms.
On the Hillsboro Housing Authority board, board member Walt Kleinsasser was selected to serve another term. His previous term just expired, said Mayor Delores Dalke.
