City purchases property for economic development
After an executive session of five minutes at its meeting Tuesday, Hillsboro City Council approved the acquisition of property to be used for economic development.
The approximately 80 acres, belonging to Martha Melcher and located by Highway 56 and Industrial Road, will be purchased at $3,000 an acre. The legal description of the land is the east half of the northeast quarter of section 35 township 19 range 2 east.
In recent months, the council approved the purchase of land for the site of new lagoons in the same vicinity at $2,000 an acre.
Bob Previtera of Reiss and Goodness Engineers of Wichita recommended and the council approved bid letting at 2 p.m. May 17 for the Lincoln Street project. Reiss and Goodness will hold a pre-bid meeting at 1:30 p.m. May 10.
The council approved the contracts for the Main Street project. The projected beginning of the work will be May 2 with an ending date of July 31.
Mayor Delores Dalke recommended and the council approved the appointments of Steve Garrett, Matt Hiebert, and Mike Duerksen to Kansas Municipal Energy Association.
In other business the council:
— approved a city liquor license for American Legion Post 366 to operate as a class A club.
— approved Resolution No. 2005-06 reconfirming support for the qualifying regional strategic plan and requesting the secretary of commerce and housing reapprove the count of Marion as a Kansas enterprise zone.
— tabled discussion about the agreement for mutual aid fire protection.
— decided by consensus not to participate in the Marion County Revitalization Task Force.
