Collegiate sweeps Lady Trojans
Lady Trojans devastate Moundridge on the road
The Hillsboro High School softball team was on a roll.
After losing their first two games of the season to Marion, they went on to sweep three of the next six teams they played — including a walloping of Moundridge last Tuesday.
Going into Friday's home games against Wichita Collegiate, the Lady Trojans possessed a 12-2 season record.
That's when the roll stopped.
Under weather conditions that caused the boys' baseball game to be canceled, the Lady Trojans fell to the Collegiate Spartans in two games, 2-0, 6-1.
Game one wasn't pretty. Hillsboro got just one hit in the game, and that was during the team's very first at-bat. Robyn Penner hit a single to get on base, but she was thrown out at second after attempting to steal.
April Funk got on base in the fifth after a fielder's choice, but she couldn't advance after Julie Wall and Danielle Goossen were thrown out.
Meanwhile, Collegiate runners were able to score in the second and the sixth innings, giving them the 2-0 win.
In game two, Hillsboro didn't fare much better. Wall was able to cross home plate in the fifth to keep up with Collegiate 2-1, but the Spartans came out in full force in the top of the sixth. They scored four straight runs and came away with the 6-1 victory.
The results of Tuesday's road game against Hesston were unavailable at press time. Hillsboro faces Haven on Tuesday.
