Community band tunes up for summer
For its second summer the community band is practicing for upcoming performances.
Greg Walker, Hillsboro High School band director and one of the founders of the community band, says he's not sure when they will perform.
"I'd like to do something on or around the Fourth of July, but I don't know that it will happen."
His ideal would be a performance at the Tabor College football stadium followed by fireworks.
The band practices at 7 p.m. Tuesday evenings in the HHS band room. Members show up when their schedules allow and are not only from Hillsboro but the surrounding area as well.
As far as the future of the band is concerned, Walker wants the group to develop a tradition and become more committed.
"For the group to develop its own identity independent of me, I guess that's my goal for this year. That way they can keep going without my schedule being a factor."
Walker is also encouraging younger participants to become involved. Anyone in sixth grade or higher could join the band.
"It's good for them to practice in the summer."
Walker also sees the band as an avenue for those who haven't played for a while to pick up their instruments again.
"There are some really good players in the community, and there are some that aren't participating yet. I think it's a waste of talent when you have something to offer and it isn't used."
