Council approves budget
Hillsboro City Council met for 15 minutes Tuesday at the city building for a budget hearing. No members of the public were in attendance.
Mayor Delores Dalke questioned the lack of a big increase in the budget for employee insurance. City administrator Steve Garrett explained the city had experienced a reduction in health insurance rates.
Council member Shelby Dirks made the motion to approve the budget, seconded by council member Byron McCarty. The motion passed unanimously.
"I think Steve did a good job with the city budget," said Dirks. "I hope other government bodies show the same restraint, concern, and compassion in their budgets."
Garrett reported on the Kansas Inter-Agency Committee meeting he and Dalke attended Tuesday in Hays. The city has applied for a grant to help finance the Lincoln Street project.
"I think we are going to meet the low-moderate income requirements," Garrett said. "There is stiff competition for the funding."
"We're off to a good start," said Dalke. "There is a revolving fund at 3.9 percent interest. If we need to borrow, we'll have to borrow."
Garrett was scheduled to attend an economic development meeting Wednesday.
The next city council meeting will be Tuesday.
